Tejano legend Gallegos pleads guilty to money laundering

Legendary Tejano singer Adalberto C. Gallegos Jr. has pleaded guilty to a money laundering charge and could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

Gallegos, who lives in Tucson, was indicted in December in U.S. District Court along with his son, Adalberto C. Gallegos III, on money-laundering charges in connection with a marijuana distribution ring.

Gallegos Jr., 52, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of conspiring with other persons to conduct financial transactions, involving the proceeds of distributing marijuana from February 2004 to July 2006.

Judge Cindy K. Jorgenson will sentence Gallegos Jr. Aug. 6.

Gallegos Jr., who performs with the group Latin Breed, got more than $270,000 in drug proceeds from a Tampa, Fla., bank account that he set up, prosecutors say. The money was deposited in Florida and withdrawn in Tucson in 2004.

Gallegos III, 32, who remains a fugitive, received about $61,800 in a similar fashion in 2005, prosecutors say.

A conviction for a violation of conspiracy to commit money laundering carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $500,000 fine or both, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix.

In 2003 Gallegos Jr. was the first Tucsonan inducted into the Tejano Hall of Fame. His rise to fame and induction was considered a major feat by a non-Texan artist. Tejano means "Texan" in Spanish.
