Pay for AML workers lags in U.S.

A new survey shows that anti-money laundering employees are more highly compensated in Europe than in the U.S.

Senior European anti-money laundering executives earn about $716,000, while their American counterparts get $597,000 a year.

The demand for skilled anti-money laundering professionals is rising and staff costs are absorbing larger percentages of compliance budgets for financial institutions, up to two-thirds. Those costs are expected to continue to balloon in the next few years.

The survey, conducted by the Association of Anti-Money Laundering Specialists, was based on interviews with more than over 2,600 anti-money laundering workers in financial institutions, government regulatory agencies and law enforcement from 105 countries.

The survey also found that:

- Government compensation is competitive with private sector salaries.
- Certification boosts earnings by as much as 20 percent.
- The median salary for anti-money laundering professionals in the U.S. was $103,00.
